BROADBAND (HI-SPEED DATA TRANSFER) OPPORTUNITY

Companies, organizations or other entities are invited to partner with the commonwealth on their grant application for Recovery funds for projects related to broadband deployment.  The goal is to efficiently expand access for citizens that do not currently have broadband and/or wireless access in their communities and to increase the utilization of existing broadband services in communities where there is access but limited households and businesses connected to the system.

The federal government will make up to $7.2 billion available nationally through three funding rounds for broadband projects.  The broadband stimulus programs are being administered by the Department of Commerce (NTIA) and the Department of Agriculture (RUS).   Funding is available for Broadband Infrastructure deployment, for Sustainable Adoption Initiatives, and for Public Computer Centers.  Additional information from the NTIA and from the RUS can be found on the federal Broadband Stimulus website.

The first round of applications closed in mid-August.  The Commonwealth submitted a total of 7 grant applications during the first funding cycle.  Copies of the Commonwealth’s grant applications can be found here

The guidelines for broadband stimulus program require states to play a consultative role to the NTIA with respect to review and ranking of funding applications submitted within their respective states.  States had 20 calendar days to review applications and to provide input to NTIA.  The review process is now complete and the Commonwealth submitted its state review and prioritization input to NTIA on October 14, 2009.

In developing project proposals and grants submissions, applicants should strive to achieve consistency with the Commonwealth’s statewide broadband plan, “A Broadband Strategy for the 21st Century: high-speed access to digital information for all Pennsylvanians”.
