BROADBAND (HI-SPEED DATA TRANSFER) OPPORTUNITY
Companies, organizations and other entities are invited to partner with the commonwealth in using Recovery Act funds for broadband deployment projects to:
1. efficiently expand access for citizens who do not currently have broadband or wireless access in their communities, and
2. increase the utilization of existing broadband services in communities where access exists but few households or businesses are connected to the system.
The federal government will make up to $7.2 billion available nationally for broadband projects. The programs are being administered by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) and the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS).
Funding is being made available in two rounds for broadband infrastructure deployment, sustainable adoption initiatives, and public computer centers. More information from the NTIA and from the RUS is available on the federal broadband stimulus Web site.
Round 1 Funding
During the first funding round, the commonwealth submitted 7 grant applications, which can be found here.
On January 12, 2010, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was awarded $2.2 million by the NTIA to collect broadband coverage data, develop a map of the state’s broadband infrastructure, plan strategies to address gaps, and identify barriers to adopting and implementing the commonwealth’s statewide broadband plan.
On February 18, 2010, the Governor’s Office of Administration was awarded $28.8 million from the NTIA to expand middle mile broadband infrastructure in northern Pennsylvania. To learn more, please consult the project fact sheet, the project map or contact us.
Round 2 Funding
The second round is currently open and funding requests will be accepted until March 15, 2010.
